Be a part of the solution...prevent cigarette butt pollution!
Smoking causes air pollution and pollutes the ground. There are over 4,000 chemicals released into the atmosphere from cigarettes when exhaled. It is estimated that 30% of the North American population smokes. These figures are even higher in other developing countries. This indicates that an enormous amount of pollution is being released in the atmosphere every day.
Cigarette butts pollute the environment. Every day millions of cigarette butts are left on the ground. Most of these cigarette butts end up in the ocean, lakes, rivers, and along the sides of the roads. Sadly, wild life, including fish and other water animals eat these butts, resulting in death. A significant number of cigarette butts are thrown out of car windows and are left on the ground. Cigarette butts do not decompose. It will take approximately 25 to 26 years for these cigarette butts to decompose. The various chemicals are absorbed into the soil, polluting the ground and plants. During dry seasons, cigarette butts can cause major fires, which are extremely harmful to the environment.
